I have written an article about Ad-Aware Free 2008 before, but this time I'd like to review the Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition – Free, Plus, and Pro. This is one of the first applications designed to find and remove adware and spyware, in this regard Ad-Aware is highly recommended. This edition is an excellent attempt at satisfying the needs of users, but it's still not perfect.
This version of Ad-Aware is a great improvement when compared to the former version. It loads faster during the boot cycle. And scanning requires less time than before; the Quick Scan finishes in less than 10 minutes. Apart from that Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition also boasts of excellent rootkit detection.
Unfortunately, you will also notice that some significant features have been disabled in the free version. Additionally, the user won't find heuristics and real-time registry protection. Ad-Aware Free doesn't incorporate scan networked drives, even a basic feature such as the scheduler remains off-limits to non-paying customers. On the other hand, one of the improvements this software presents is the proprietary real-time defender Ad-Watch Live which has been reconfigured to run more smoothly in the background.
Thanks to interface refinements the usage of Ad-Aware is very easy. Another new feature is the addition of an Action button placement. It is located at the bottom of the pane and could seem strange to those users familiar with older versions, however the forced continuity between windows is an advantage.
Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition is significantly lighter and faster than the previous versions. The broad study revealed that Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition:
- Uses 74% less memory than Ad-Aware 2008.
- Only uses 18% of the CPU during scans – nearly 60% less resources than the previous version altogether, considerably less than each competitor product tested, including AVG, Kaspersky, Norton, and PC Tools.
- Scans 36 MB per second – faster than each competitor product tested, and over 4 times faster than AVG's.
To tell you the truth some users comments highlight that this version is slow when compared to other programs. Another user's comment indicated that this new edition doesn't remove as much spyware as other programs available. They are much better and remove vundo and smitfraud variants. Still, a lot of computer users state that they are satisfied with this Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition as it is free, regardless that other paid for programs offer extra functions.
